On Saturday, August 6, 2011 we went to Island Beach State park with our friends George, Matt, Jackie, Andre, Judy, Jody and Jim. A few of us drove together, and others met us there. It was a beautiful, sunny, perfect beach day with a nice breeze, temperatures in the 80s and the ocean was about 80 degrees - perfect for swimming!
We set up an umbrella compound with about 7-8 umbrellas so that we could enjoy ourselves all day without getting sunburned. It took us some time to get all those umbrellas up. Once they were up, we set up all our chairs and our multitude of coolers, filled with delectable food and beverages. We all brought our own lunches, but in addition several people brought some things to share. We had cocktails named "Jody Juice", "Judy Juice" and "Jim Juice" (named for their prospective makers), frozen Milky Ways and Snicker bars, bean salad, chocolate chip cookies, peach caramel pecan pie, cherry chipotle lime pie, and various other fruits and snacks. It was an outlandish smorgasborg - like nothing ever experienced on a beach before!
We sat and yammered all day and we all took a dip in the ocean. Some of us were more brave than others and Andre, our resident dolphin showed us how it is done.
We played paddle ball and Jim and Matt flew a kite. We also had our own version of an America's Next Top Model photo shoot on the beach and some of the guys even got in on the action!
Our fun was interrupted more than once by a young lifeguard we nicknamed "Beach Nazi" who interrupted our fun games of paddle ball and kite flying to tell us these activities are no longer allowed on the beach. WTF!???!! We could tell she hated having to enforce this new rule and explained that people had been complaining about getting hit with balls and things, so they had to put a stop to the fun.
We left the beach around 6 p.m. and headed into Seaside Heights to see if we could find a nice place for dinner. We had a tough time finding a place (as well as parking) so George suggested we drive over the bridge and see what we could find there. Luckily some smart person in our group looked up restaurants on their smart phone and we located a nice Japanese restaurant which turned out to be a very good choice. We had a lot of fun trying to decide what to eat and learning how to use chopsticks.
All in all a great day!!
