Being that it was our last day, we made no plans other than to hang around the hotel and on the beach all day. We wanted to soak in as much of the beach as we could.
Lucky for us, it was one of the most beautiful days of the week.
Rogelio was our waiter. Mr. Sassy told me that while I was away at the restroom, he got to talk to Rogelio a little bit about his Mayan heritage, which he said was very interesting. They talked about truths versus myths about the Mayans, including how the Mayans are portrayed in movies (many inaccuracies there).
I did retain one Spanish phrase from Rogelio this week, "Gusta verle", which means "nice to see you".
We spent almost the entire day at the beach today. I stayed under the umbrella most of the day and saved my swimming for later in the afternoon when the sun wasn't so strong.
We took some pictures of ourselves sitting on this piece of driftwood that had washed ashore.
The ocean was sooooo beautiful today. The temperature was around 90 degrees and it wasn't rough at all. The waves were big but not rough and we were just floating over the waves.
At lunch today we had a different waiter. I got the fish sandwich with curly fries and Mr. Sassy got the tuna sandwich with fries and a couple of Coronas. I didn't take any photos, since I've already posted photos of these sandwiches before.
When we were in the ocean, Mr. Sassy made a friend - an Argentinian guy who struck up a conversation with him because he liked Mr. Sassy's bathing suit (which has Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon insignia on it). They ended up talking for about 30 minutes in the ocean about progressive rock. I was cracking up at Mr. Sassy because he was struggling to say band names in Spanish, which is funny because there is no need to say a band's name in Spanish. King Crimson is King Crimson whether you speak English or Spanish. It's not Rey Carmesi. The Argentinian guy was laughing at Mr. Sass's attempts to change every band name into Spanish. So, for example, Mr. Sass would say, "Are you familiar with the band ..... what is the word for King? Rey....what's the word for red??? Rojo?" And the guy would laugh and say, "Oh, you mean King Crimson? Yeah, they're just called King Crimson". Mr. Sass was making it more complicated than it needed to be.
I also got a kick out of Mr. Sassy "wallowing" in the shallow part of the ocean. I like to call him Wally the Wallower. He used my wacky noodle to let the ocean toss him around. So cute.
We stayed at the beach all day until happy hour. We got a couple mojitos, which were fanastic. When we were approaching the bar, we could hear these loud voices all the way across the resort and we knew they were big-mouthed Americans making asses of themselves. They were so obnoxious, I just had to get them on video, so I told Phil to pretend I was taking his photo so I could secretly videotape them. The poor bartenders! They must have had a splitting headache by the time happy hour was over.
I also went to the main desk to pay our final bill (for charges we incurred during the week) and that only came to a little over $100 USD..not bad. I also made arrangements for a taxi to pick us up in the morning to take us to the bus station. Technically, we could walk, but due to timing issues, the cab would work out better because the time we would save would allow us enough time to eat a quick breakfast before leaving.
We went back to the room to shower up for dinner. On the way, we saw the ducky family and it was so cute - the mother duck was sitting on her babies to protect them.
The towel art in our room was extra cute today.
Tonight we dressed up a little more than usual because our final dinner was going to be at a more fancy place than normal, a restaurant called Luna Maya, which was only a block or so from our hotel - on the upper floor of the same building where Baremar restaurant is located (where we ate last visit). I had read many excellent reviews of Luna Maya, so we were really looking forward to this dinner.
The restaurant was very pretty, sophisticated and relaxed. We loved the interior design.
The menu was sophisticated, gourmet Mexican. Mr. Sassy got a fish ceviche appetizer that had a green chili sauce with coriander and had firm balls of guacamole in the ceviche. He said it was spicy - in a good way.
For his entree, he got the blackened tuna which was cooked to perfection - almost sushi grade, with a beautiful smoky, blackened crust. It came with firm fluffy pilaf.
His dessert was tamarind sorbet with guava chunks in it.
My appetizer was a selection of empenadas - one had a mushroom filling, one had zucchini leaf filling, and the other had a cheese filling. Each one had a different color dough and were lightly fried, and there was this delicious cream sauce over top. Oh, and a packet of spicy sauce to dip them in on the side. Yum!
My entree was a salmon dish that was served over a wild mushroom risotto. The salmon was so moist and delicious and had a creamy green sauce over it that was delectable. It was one of the most delicious salmon dishes I ever ate.
For dessert, I had a molten chocolate cake with ice cream and chunks of guava. It was the best molten cake I have ever eaten because the chocolate was really intense - bordering on bitter and the molten chocolate in the center was nice and warm. Oh my.
We had our dinner in the main dining room, but moved to the patio for our dessert and that was a nice place to eat.
The service was perfection at Luna Maya...attentive but not cloying, and also proactively helpful, for example fetching the elevator for us when we left, offering us a pillow when we moved to the outside seating to make us more comfortable...things like that. Top notch all the way and we tipped accordingly.
It was a long dinner - about 2 hours - because the tamarind sorbet was made to order (I guess they have an ice cream machine and whip up batches on request).
Of all the dinners we had this week, Luna Maya was one of the highlights, as was Origenes.
All in all, this was the perfect final day of vacation with the pristine beach weather, lots of relaxation and a fabulous gourmet dinner to top it all off.
What a vacation!!!
As a grand finale, the next page of this report contains a slew of random photos from our trip.
Until next time, adios Amigos!
